Toei Labo Tech Purchases Dual Sledgehammers to Speed Workflow

Tokyo Based Facility Adds New Core I/O and Central Server

Montreal, CANADA, April 30, 2007 — Maximum Throughput Inc. (www.max-t.com), developers of ultra high performance software-based solutions for networked storage infrastructure and media management, announced today that Toei Labo Tech Co., a post production facility in Chofu, Tokyo, has purchased two Sledgehammer systems to revamp their video I/O and file sharing capabilities.

Toei Labo Tech is currently in the process of migrating to a digital intermediates (DI) environment and reinforcing its infrastructure including networking and servers. They decided to purchase a Sledgehammer HD!O 9.6TB Dual Link system and a Sledgehammer NAS 10.4TB as the core of their new DI workflow. The two systems are connected via a high-speed Infiniband link for fast data transfer.

Makoto Negishi, head of the Image Processing Division, Toei Labo Tech Co., Ltd. said, “We used to have to make copies of source material for every step in our pipeline, from shooting, editing and manipulating, to outputting to film. And, it required tremendous amounts of time and work to duplicate HD material for feature films. What we learned during the extensive tests we did with Sledgehammer is that we could improve speed for access, copy and transfer fivefold.”

Negishi continued, “Because we don’t have to duplicate data at each stage of our new workflow, we can reduce our local storage requirements to the bare minimum. We use the Sledgehammers as central servers and work directly off of them. We could only attain this level of workflow thanks to Sledgehammer’s superb network performance. We believe we now have the essential core infrastructure ideal for our future deployment of a DI environment including color grading.”

With their new workflow, HD material recorded on UDR from KEISOKU GIKEN is transferred in real-time into the Sledgehammer HD!O Dual Link system in uncompressed 4:4:4 HD resolution, and accessed from various systems for editing or manipulation. Then, the data is transferred to the Sledgehammer NAS system connected via Infiniband at a rate exceeding 300MB/sec., where it is formatted for their ARRILASER digital film recorder. At that point, the data that is ready for film printing and will be recorded directly as the ARRILASER simply network mounts the Sledgehammer.

Izumi Shinohara of Mitomo Co., Ltd., who designed Toei Labo Tech’s system architecture, had the following to add, “We were sure that the Sledgehammer systems, which offer exceptional performance and an extensive software toolset, were the ideal systems for Toei Labo Tech. We are proud of the workflow we constructed for the company, utilizing Sledgehammer’s capabilities exhaustively.”

John Miller, Max-T’s Vice President of Worldwide Sales had the following comments on the purchase, “We’re very pleased to see that Toei Labo Tech has seen the value in using dual Sledgehammer systems in an online/nearline capacity. Our latest product models are software enabled to be very effectively used in tandem, and we look forward to working with Toei Labs over the coming months and years to further assist in streamlining their DI process.”
