Montreal, Québec
– February 2, 2006 – Maximum Throughput Inc.
(www.max-t.com), developers of ultra high performance software-based
solutions for networked storage infrastructure and media management,
announced today that QVC, the United Kingdom’s leading television
shopping channel, has purchased a Sledgehammer SD!O system with two
terabytes (2TB) of storage capacity for use in their broadcasting operations
in the UK.
Founded in 1993, QVC is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
and reaches over 17 million homes in the UK. With broadcasts that are
very graphics intensive, in addition to a significant amount of in-house
content created to run between show segments, QVC was looking for a
solution to centralize storage throughout the facility that was also
suitable for use by the company’s teams of editors.
“We recently decided to transition to PC- and Mac-based systems
and software for in-house content creation and broadcast graphics,”
said Leo Smith, QVC Senior Systems Engineer. “To make the decision
possible, we needed to have a shared storage infrastructure sitting
behind these systems. A big component in the final selection was based
around flexibility and reliability – the missing link was centralized
storage that was also compatible with our traditional editing equipment.”
“Essentially, to achieve the workflow we had in mind, first we
required a high performance file server that could efficiently handle
steady volumes of 2D and 3D content. Complicating matters, however,
was our simultaneous need for the ability to make all stored material
available over our SDI network – like a DDR for our editing suites
as well as for printing finished pieces to tape. After seeing Sledgehammer
at IBC 2005, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that both of the
components we had been looking for existed in one integrated system,
and at a price that was preferable to two separate purchases,”
said Richard Burrell, Director of Engineering at QVC UK. “And,
since the Sledgehammer system’s integrated by design, that’s
one less compatibility issue we have to consider,” he concluded.
“Since Sledgehammer SD!O can connect to GigE and SDI networks
concurrently, QVC determined it was the ideal solution to use simultaneously
as a file server and a digital disk recorder (DDR). Should QVC decide
that more storage is in order, or that more is needed by virtue of a
move into HD, the current system is scalable up to 32TB and Sledgehammer
HD!O provides the same reliable flexibility to users working with high-def
content,” said John Miller, Maximum Throughput Vice President
of Worldwide Sales.
