Maximum Throughput's Sledgehammer HD!O rounds out DALSA Origin Camera Workflow

Sledgehammer HD!O acts as real-time film recorder at DALSA Digital Cinema Facility

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, NAB (Booth #SL5712) - April 18, 2005 - Maximum Throughput Inc. (www.max-t.com), Maximum Throughput Inc. (www.max-t.com), provider of high performance networked storage and media management solutions, announced that DALSA Corporation (www.DALSA.com) has purchased several Sledgehammer HD!O systems for its DALSA Digital Cinema rental facility in Los Angeles, CA. Sledgehammer HD!O will be used as the image data recorder for DALSA's Origin camera, fulfilling the demands for high throughput to keep pace with the camera as it records digital motion pictures.

DALSA is using the Sledgehammer HD!O system in the rental pool along with its Origin camera. First, footage will be shot directly onto the Sledgehammer through an Infiniband interface with the camera. Captured footage may then be viewed on site and shooting conditions adjusted if required. The Sledgehammer can then be brought into the machine room of the post production facility and connected directly to the network through GigE, HIPPI, Infiniband, and Video protocols, and can also be used as a shared storage device inside the facility to optimize the production process. If the Sledgehammer is still required in the field, material can be offloaded to local systems or shared storage, including another Sledgehammer, already integrated in the production facility.

"We evaluated many systems to include in our rental pool before choosing the Sledgehammer HD!O," commented John Coghill, Vice President and General Manager, DALSA Digital Cinema. He continued, "we selected Sledgehammer because it was the only system that completed the missing link in our end to end workflow solution. The primary output from our camera is a 4k, 16bit "digital negative" provided through a fiber optic Infiniband connection and requires a recorder capable of supporting in excess of 500 MB/sec of frame accurate recording. The Sledgehammer HD!O delivers that for us. Additionally, the recorder is network ready, allowing our customers to easily move data into post production through any number of interfaces. Finally, we selected Max-T as our partner because of their focus in the entertainment industry. For instance, in order to meet our customer's requirements, Max-T is already working on a light weight version of a recorder that will be more portable and designed for the specific demands of location shooting."

Maximum Throughput CEO Giovanni Tagliamonti added: "We're extremely pleased to have been chosen by DALSA as their partner in this endeavor. The powerful combination of our Sledgehammer HD!O with DALSA's Origin camera changes the paradigm for film workflow production. This solution delivers the quality and capability to save time and money."

Sledgehammer HD!Oô is the first media-aware storage appliance to sit squarely between the video and data realms, acting as a versatile, high performance link. On the video side, it operates as an ultra-high capacity DDR with a familiar control interface that any digital artist or I/O operator can access from any workstation using the new MAXmediaô content management application. On the network side, it is the fastest NAS box in the world, easily managed using the web-based MAXminô utility, and capable of handling the most demanding rendering jobs. Network users can instantly view and manipulate its centralized content as standard files within folders using desktop file browsers, or in a more visually interactive way as clips within reels using MAXmediaô, with the added ability to play back and time manipulate audio and video tracks.

The Origin camera is the first system to deliver the image quality, resolution, and transfer capabilities to supplant film stock as a truly viable method for all digital production. Images are recorded directly to disk and can be reviewed on set, eliminating the time consuming current method of developing the film and then reviewing on video tape, known in the industry as the "dailies" process. The staff on the set of the shoot can immediately review material to determine whether scenes just completed are acceptable or if they need to be reshot. This new process vastly reduces time and associated costs of the production phase of any project by eliminating delays before reshooting when necessary.
