MONTREAL, March 23, 2004 Maximum Throughput Inc. (www.max-t.com), a developer and provider of high-performance, networked storage and media management solutions, announced today that the growing Manhattan-based studio rhinofx (www.rhinofx.com) has purchased a Sledgehammer NAS system as a workgroup file server for their Visual Effects department. Shortly after announcing plans for a major expansion, including the opening of a new division offering 3D pre-visualization services, rhinofx plans to attract more long-form projects while maintaining a solid foothold in the television commercial market. Currently in the process of making the Sledgehammer installation permanent, rhinofx found that Maximum Throughput's high performance storage was a better overall fit than other systems that were under consideration at the growing facility. “We've been looking at high-performance file servers for some time,” said Rich Torpey, rhinofx VP of Engineering. “Most recently we'd built our own servers with the expertise of our staff engineers. Previously we'd used custom-made units from one well-known vendor, and I had used other proprietary-hardware servers at another facility, so we evaluated those as well as a third vendor's turnkey system. But all of them involved greater hardware expenditures. Feedback from users and familiarity with Max-T's experienced personnel convinced us to take a closer look at Sledgehammer, so we did in-house performance tests prior to purchase. And it performed exceptionally well.” “Value is measured in terms of cost per megabyte per second, so performance is paramount,” remarked Mike Hughes, Max-T VP of Business Development. “But there are also acquisition and ownership expenses to consider, as well as compatibility with existing network architectures and legacy file systems. After careful evaluation, rhinofx decided that Sledgehammer delivered the best price performance.” “Sledgehammer is a much more open system, using off-the-shelf hardware,” Torpey concluded. “I expect it will be more maintainable and expandable than proprietary units. Among the advantages that are already apparent, our artists can collaborate more smoothly now. Sledgehammer has minimized slowdowns when artists need to access material while renders are in process. So the combination of low maintenance and high performance has simplified and fortified our infrastructure, and should help us manage our growing demands.” Sledgehammer is a networked storage solution, optimized for moving digital content at unparalleled speeds onto or off an IP-based network. Sledgehammer HD!O can consolidate all the storage needs of a post-production facility, including HD material, regardless of the data sets in use. Sledgehammer HD!O also provides real-time SD and HD resolution video I/O capabilities, via a web-based interface. New Sledgehammer SD!O delivers the benefits of HD!O but is tailored to SD work and SD budgets, offering an affordable migration path to HD. And since Sledgehammer HD!O and SD!O are true NAS devices, all networked users (Windows, UNIX, Linux, Mac, etc.) can access the same data at the same time.
