MONTREAL, February 10, 2004
Maximum Throughput Inc., a developer and provider of high-performance,
networked storage and media management solutions, announced today that
Calgary, Alberta-based ACMEworks Digital Film Inc. (www.acmeworksdf.com)
has purchased a Sledgehammer HD!O in order to centralize high-definition
(HD) and standard-definition (SD) input & output (I/O) as well as
provide fast network access to captured material.
ACMEworks is a specialized post-production service company dedicated
to digital film recording for preservation as well as presentation.
Among ACMEworks clients are studios that have implemented archiving
policies to safeguard the current and future equity of their franchise
products. These clients include The Cartoon Network, Warner Brothers
Animation, Stretch Films, Curious Pictures, and Walt Disney TV
Animation.
Shortly after NAB 03, I heard word of a new Network Attached
Storage (NAS) system one that, you might say, did considerably
more than store. Then, while attending IBC 03, I witnessed Sledgehammer
at work in several booths, and I was impressed, said Simon
Minshall, Senior Engineer at ACMEworks. Prior to seeing Sledgehammer
for myself, our growing needs suggested a Storage Area Network (SAN)
would be required. But Ive found SAN prone to data drop-outs,
unduly complex to incorporate and troublesome to manage. Sledgehammer
HD!O, on the other hand, is free of these frustrations. Its essentially
two products we wanted in one. The accountants liked that.
With all the throughput of Sledgehammer NAS, the worlds fastest
NAS box, Sledgehammer HD!O is in fact a versatile, high-speed video
and data conduit. The result is a Network Attached Media Bridge, designed
to address the specific needs of the entertainment industry.
ACMEworks business is divided between SD and HD projects, with
standard-definition work currently accounting for roughly 95% of the
volume. But thats already changing. Were ramping up,
Minshall said. In addition to Sledgehammer HD!Os facility
with HD material, it offers us the extra benefit of a high speed file
server. Multiple protocols and hardware compatibility arent issues.
And features like real-time capture-to-disk allow us to expedite project
completion as we accelerate our workflow, so weve raised our target
volume of HD work accordingly to half of our overall business.
Two hundred thousand 2K images weekly is already impressive as
far as productivity is concerned, remarked Mike Hughes,
Max-Ts VP of Business Development. However, profitability
is completely dependent on throughput, especially when you measure ROI
in terms of dollars per Megabyte per second. I look forward to seeing
the current figure eclipsed as ACMEworks proceeds, now with a greater
emphasis on HD.
Sledgehammer is a networked storage solution, optimized for moving digital
content at unparalleled speeds onto or off an IP-based network. Sledgehammer
HD!O can consolidate all the storage needs of a post-production facility,
including HD material, regardless of the data sets in use. Sledgehammer
HD!O provides, via a web-based interface, real-time SD and HD resolution
video I/O capabilities. And since Sledgehammer HD!O is a true NAS device,
all networked users (Windows, UNIX, Linux, Mac, etc.) can access the
same data at the same time.
