MONTREAL, March 9, 2004 Maximum Throughput Inc. (www.max-t.com), a developer and provider of high-performance, networked storage and media management solutions, announced today that PostWorks New York (www.pwny.com), post-production specialists occupying one of the most technologically robust facilities on the east coast, has purchased a Sledgehammer HD!O system to manage a massive volume of encoding; the digitizing and loading of .dpx files in particular as projects involving digital intermediates increase. In light of the amount of work PostWorks does in both standard and high definition, the full-service facility needed a solution to centralize encoding work cost-effectively. Considering the size of their new Soho-based premises and the quantity of data that must migrate throughout it daily, more efficient access had become an issue. Edit rooms were being booked for encoding, which tied up valuable time on expensive machinery and created a bottleneck as editors waited for room availability. “Sledgehammer undid the bottleneck,” remarked PostWorks CEO Billy Baldwin. “The bulk of our current projects are long-form, so we need to process a huge amount of data daily. Sometimes that meant using a (Quantel) iQ machine for simple encode jobs, which tied up the room. But regularly importing .dpx files directly, in volumes like 27,000 at once, and then moving them across the entire facility is no small task. Now we encode via Sledgehammer, which liberates our far more expensive gear so those resources can be allocated more productively and profitably.” “Sledgehammer has allowed PostWorks to put the right job in the right box,” commented Mike Hughes, V.P. Business Development at Max-T. “By diverting workload, more costly machines can now be dedicated to the specific revenue-generating functions for which they were designed. PostWorks has subsequently shown how Sledgehammer can pay dividends that extend beyond its own ROI and even so far as the ROI of distinct equipment that can stay in use consistently.” Baldwin concurs, “Now a wider aspect of the overall facility can remain actively engaged with project work. We can park Sledgehammer in a machine room, access it from anywhere and one-step the process where other systems we evaluated involved two- or even three-stepping. Since its installation we can also accept what we call ‘"bureau service" work essentially over-the-counter work from companies without the requisite machinery in-house which wasn't practical before. Sledgehammer has enabled us to complete modest projects like these with the appropriate resources more efficiently, to the point where we've developed a new revenue stream.” Sledgehammer is a networked storage solution, optimized for moving digital content at unparalleled speeds onto or off an IP-based network. Sledgehammer HD!O can consolidate all the storage needs of a post-production facility, including HD material, regardless of the data sets in use. Sledgehammer HD!O also provides real-time SD and HD resolution video I/O capabilities, via a web-based interface. New Sledgehammer SD!O delivers the benefits of HD!O but is tailored to SD work and SD budgets, offering an affordable migration path to HD. And since Sledgehammer HD!O and SD!O are true NAS devices, all networked users (Windows, UNIX, Linux, Mac, etc.) can access the same data at the same time.
